PDF Compress Online

Use this free online PDF compressor to reduce a file up to 100 MB in your browser, compare sizes, and download only a smaller result.

No file selected.

Uses aggressive 72-DPI compression in your browser. Pages become images, so small text may be less clear; text is not searchable and links or forms are not retained.

What is the pdf compress online?

A free online PDF compressor can make a document easier to share, store or attach by reducing its file size. This tool uses one aggressive raster setting: it renders every PDF page at 72 DPI and stores the page as a JPEG image at quality 35 in a new PDF. This can be effective for scans and image-heavy files, but fine print can become blurry; text is no longer selectable or searchable, and links, forms and layers are not retained. Files are processed in your browser and are not uploaded. The tool offers a download only when the output is smaller than the original.

How it works

Choose one PDF up to 100 MB and press Compress PDF. PDF.js renders each page in your browser at 72 DPI; the canvas encodes each rendered page as a JPEG at quality 35, and pdf-lib places those images into a new PDF using the original page dimensions. A progress bar reports page-by-page work. Raster processing is limited to 100 pages and a total pixel budget to bound browser memory use. This free PDF compressor has a fixed setting, not a target-size control: the output depends on the page content, so it cannot promise a particular size such as 100 KB or 200 KB. The output is image-based: text cannot be selected or searched, and annotations such as links, interactive forms and separate layers are not copied. If a document exceeds the processing limit, split it into smaller files. If the result is not smaller, no download is provided and the original remains unchanged.

Worked example

Suppose a scanned handout is 8 MB. Upload it and press Compress PDF. The tool renders each page at 72 DPI and rebuilds the file from low-quality JPEG page images. If the output is 1.6 MB, the comparison reports 6.4 MB saved, or 80%. Those figures are an example only: actual results depend on the original pages, and the compressor cannot target an exact size such as 100 KB or 200 KB. If a PDF is mostly text or vector content and does not get smaller, the page reports that no smaller download was created. Keep the original if you need sharp text, searchable content, links or forms.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDF files uploaded?

No. The PDF is processed in your browser and is not sent to a server by this tool.

Will the compressed PDF keep selectable text?

No. This tool uses aggressive 72-DPI image compression, so small text may also be blurry. Text is not selectable or searchable, and links, interactive forms and layers are not retained.

Will compression always make my PDF smaller?

No. Image-heavy PDFs often shrink, but text or vector-heavy PDFs may not. The tool will not offer an output download unless the generated file is smaller than the original.

Can this PDF compressor reduce a file to 100 KB or 200 KB?

If you need a PDF compressor to 100 KB or a PDF compressor to 200 KB, note that this tool cannot set or guarantee a target size. It uses one fixed 72-DPI setting, and the resulting size depends on the document; a download is offered only when the output is smaller than the original.

Can I adjust the compression quality?

No. It uses a fixed aggressive setting of 72 DPI and JPEG quality 35%; it has no quality controls. This prioritizes smaller output over fine detail.

Can I compress a password-protected PDF?

No. Remove the password protection first, then select the unlocked PDF.

What are the file and page limits?

Files can be up to 100 MB. Processing supports up to 100 pages and also has a pixel limit to keep browser memory use bounded; split a very large PDF if it exceeds that limit.
