How to convert PDF to Markdown
Choose a PDF from your device or drop it into the file area. The converter checks that the file is a PDF and under the 50 MB limit, then reads each page locally in your browser. A progress indicator reports the current page; use Cancel to stop a long conversion. Select the options before choosing a file: retain page boundaries, remove repeated headers and footers, merge wrapped lines into paragraphs, or extract embedded images for a ZIP archive. If the PDF is encrypted, a password prompt appears only when needed. The password is not saved.
Once extraction finishes, review the Markdown in the editable output tab or switch to the sanitized preview. You can copy the Markdown, download a .md file, or download a ZIP containing Markdown and any successfully extracted images. The output statistics summarize page count, words, characters, headings, and processing time. No PDF bytes or extracted text are uploaded to a remote conversion service.
What converts well and what does not
Text-based PDFs with a clear reading order tend to convert best. Font sizes help identify headings; font names can hint at bold, italic, or monospace text. Line positions help rebuild paragraphs and lists, and link annotations can preserve clickable URLs. Repeated text near page edges is often removed as a header or footer. These are layout clues rather than guarantees, so inspect the generated Markdown before publishing or using it as source content.
PDFs are designed to preserve printed appearance, not the original semantic structure. Complex tables, merged cells, sidebars, footnotes, columns that change midway through a page, and text positioned individually may not map neatly to Markdown. The tool makes a best-effort pass at aligned columns and two-column reading order, but manual cleanup may be necessary. A scanned PDF contains page images rather than selectable text; enable OCR to recognize it. OCR accuracy depends on image quality, language, fonts, and page rotation, so names, numbers, and punctuation should be checked carefully. Image extraction also depends on how each PDF encodes its graphics.
Common use cases
Documentation teams can recover draft text from archived manuals or move PDF guides into a Markdown-based documentation system. Students and researchers can turn text-based readings into searchable notes, then edit quotations and citations before reuse. Developers can bring PDF reference material into a repository alongside READMEs and technical notes. Content creators migrating to static sites can use Markdown as a maintainable source instead of retyping a published PDF.
Markdown is also useful when preparing text for an LLM or retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline because headings, lists, and paragraphs remain explicit and easy to chunk. Conversion is only a starting point: check page order, tables, and OCR output, and follow the document's license and privacy requirements. Since processing stays in the browser, the converter is suitable for local work, but it cannot guarantee that the resulting Markdown perfectly reproduces every visual detail of the original PDF.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PDF files uploaded to a server?
No. PDF parsing, optional OCR, and Markdown conversion run in your browser. The selected PDF is not sent to our server.
Can this convert scanned PDFs?
Yes. Enable OCR before selecting a file. Scanned pages are rendered in your browser and recognized with Tesseract.js. OCR can take longer and may need proofreading.
Will tables and columns convert perfectly?
Simple, consistently aligned tables and two-column layouts are handled with best-effort layout heuristics. Complex tables, mixed columns, and decorative layouts may need manual Markdown cleanup.
Can I extract images from a PDF?
You can enable image extraction. Detected embedded images are packaged in a ZIP with Markdown references; some unusual PDF image encodings may not be exportable.
What happens with password-protected PDFs?
The converter asks for the password only after the PDF requires it. The password is used locally for that conversion and is never saved.
