ASCII art is a way of drawing pictures and lettering using only the characters on your keyboard. A text-to-ASCII generator takes a normal word like HELLO and redraws each letter as a much larger shape built out of symbols such as slashes, underscores, pipes and hashes, producing a banner you can paste anywhere plain text is accepted. How it works

Each FIGlet font is a small file that describes how to draw every letter and digit as a grid of characters several rows tall. When you type a word, the tool looks up each character in the chosen font and stitches the rows together side by side to form one big banner. You pick a font from the dropdown — Standard is the classic look, while Big, Slant, Block, Banner, Shadow, Bubble and a 3D style give bolder or more decorative results — and the art updates live as you type. Fonts are loaded only when you select them, so the page stays fast. Keep text short: banner fonts are tall and wide, so a handful of characters is usually enough before the output becomes too wide to fit comfortably in a terminal or a code comment, which is why the tool shows a live character-width readout. You can tint the characters with a text color and add a background color, though the default already has strong contrast in both light and dark mode. When you are happy, copy the banner as plain text (spacing and line breaks preserved exactly), download it as a .txt file, download it as a PNG image, or use the “Copy as comment” option to wrap it in // , #, /* */ or HTML comment syntax ready to paste straight into source code.

Worked example

Type the word Hi and choose the Standard font, and the tool produces: _ _ _ | | | (_) | |_| | | | _ | | |_| |_|_| Each original letter has become a five-row shape, and the rows are joined so the whole word reads across. Switch the font to Slant or Block and the same two letters take on a completely different style without you retyping anything. Because the output is ordinary text, you can paste it into a README, a terminal banner or a code comment — just remember it only lines up correctly in a monospace (fixed-width) font, where every character occupies the same horizontal space.
